Port Orchard Community Group –

To all my friends and neighbors of the South Kitsap Area!

Community is vital. It is the cornerstone to any movement, organization, or efforts at real systemic change. We cannot advocate for our people if we are not advocating with our people; we cannot advocate with our people unless we know our people. Just as powerful as protest, boycotts, and direct political action is mutual aid to support our community. Food programs, clothing and book swaps, and trade of knowledge, skills, and resources are critical to fighting fascism and affecting change.

My name is Paul Edward Fontenot. I’ve been a resident of South Kitsap County all my life and there is no place I’d rather call my home and community.

Resistance in Progress  I encourage all of you to come on down and support the people and workers in your community. We’ll be focusing on clothing mending, so bring your needle and thread!

We could use some donations of food, books, clothes if anyone could provide. We make sure that we have warm meals and produce available for anyone and everyone who comes by, so food donations are always welcome.

We’re building something great here. Something that can really make a difference for folks beat down by the Epstein class and left behind by modern society. Thank you to everyone who’s apart of this and I hope to see more of you very soon.

1. Addressing the issue of DEI as it impacts minorities and LGBTQ+ people.  As our institutions, private companies, medical facilities, and educational institutions-not to mention all branches of government continue to fail us- I think maybe we could thank those companies that have not abandoned DEI.  ACTION: 7 individual letters to places we all shop and between us were signed then delivered to the businesses we wish to thank. Only 1 letter per business .
2. Bad news:  Medical facilities are abandoning their transgender patients for fear of losing their Medicaid dollars even though none of that has passed yet Emoji.

The good news is my friends at PFLAG (parents and friends of lesbians and gays) NYC chapter were on hand to raise the LGBTQ flag that the Trump administration ordered lowered at the Stonewall Memorial that is a national monument dedicated to the birthplace of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in New York CityEmoji.

Neighbor To Neighbor Food Drive and Mutual Aid Work Group

WHAT:  Starting Food Donation and Collection in our neighborhoods to benefit South Kitsap Helpline.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT:  Not only does this benefit our neighbors in need in Port Orchard and the surrounding area, but this group could be used as a launching pad to quickly mobilize food delivery for immigrants reluctant to leave home when ICE is in the neighborhood.  This is what MN citizens organized.

WHEN:  Organize in your own neighborhood. Ours is organized on an every other week basis.  Other groups can organize it either more or less often.

WHERE:  Best done in your own neighborhood.  Creating relationships in each of our communities makes our efforts to fight injustice stronger.

HOW: We have a draft document you could consider using that may help you get started speaking with your neighbors and provide some logistical help. (attached)

WHO:  Please consider joining our group. Any questions contact Terry Holtgraves (253) 670-8646 or tholtgra@comcast.net

This is a key way Minnesota was able to have rapid response to ICE in their neighborhoods.

Political “Next Steps” and how to make a difference!
Key and important for the way ahead.

There are many topics under this umbrella.
Please contact Lora Ferraro and cc Scott Brown if interested in getting involved at  Lora lora@ferraro.cloud & Scott scottesplace@hotmail.com.

The Political Work Group is up and running hard:

We have a core group of 13 individuals with a mission to leverage SKI Political capital to support candidates who represent our values, and oppose initiatives that negatively impact citizens of Kitsap County.   We are closing in on a candidates questionnaire that can and will be sent out to assess whether any declared candidates meet our standards as outlined in the SKI Mission Statement.   The SKI group will get a voice in our final decision of who we will endorse in the primary and/or general elections.  We take endorsements very seriously and are exercising great care and transparency in the process.

We have made our first endorsement of No Hate Washington in opposition to the Brian Heywood initiatives IL26-001 and IL26-638.  These poorly conceived initiatives would, among other things, involuntarily out children to their parents who may be expressing non-conforming gender identity and subject girls (only) to genital inspection as a condition to play sports.  We join several other Washington Indivisible chapters in opposing these initiatives in the November general elections.  As a first gesture of support, we will partner with No Hate Washington at the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration and July 18th Kitsap Pride Festival.

Lot’s of other activities under way.

Please contact Lora Ferraro and cc Scott Brown if interested in getting involved at  Lora lora@ferraro.cloud & Scott scottesplace@hotmail.com.

Election season is here and everyone can help, even from home! Postcards from Markers for Democracy have been highly effective in reaching voters and getting them out to vote. People show up at the polls with postcards in their hands.

This is how you can write postcards at home:

Below is the link for Markers for Democracy (MFD). A Postcard writing group.  Postcards For Democracy is Markers for Democracy’s online portal for distributing addresses and the required scripts for their postcard programs. To get addresses/scripts for the cards is a two-step process: create account and attend a 1-hour bootcamp training (zoom session) on how the process works and what they expect from you.

Here are the steps:

  • Go to http://www.MarkersForDemocracy.org website
  • Go to the pull down menu
  • Select Postcarding
  • Select Postcards for Democracy
  • Scroll down and select the blue button labeled:PFD Account Request Form
The Request Form will ask two questions that you will need guidance on how to answer:
  1. What political organizations are you affiliated with?
Answer:  South Kitsap Indivisible (SKI), Port Orchard, WA.
  2. How did you hear about us?  Please be specific.
Answer:  Ellie Klauminzer, SKI Postcard Workgroup Lead

Second step,
attend a bootcamp training via zoom session.  The next one is scheduled for
June 10, 2026 at 5 PM PST. The group is out of New York City, thus the earlier start time for us. MFD offers bootcamp training once a month, on the second Wednesday of every month from 8:00-9:00 pm EST/5:00 – 6:00 pm PST. Click this link:  June 10th MDF Postcard Bootcamp.

Once you complete the training, MFD will email you instruct you to complete a small batch of cards. They are checking your ability to follow directions and you possess legible handwriting.

Other possible Postcards sites are:

  1. PostcardstoVoters.org How this site works:
    You are directed to write 1 card;
Take picture of your completed card
Send the photo in for approval,
Then Postcards to Voters will email back to you a bundle of addresses and the script to use.
  1. Postcards4WA.org
This organization requires you to attach a disclaimer statement on each postcard.
There are WA State Campaign Finance Rules to follow on this site.
These cards will be critical for the State Supreme Court Justices in the 2026 Mid-terms.

Help create the Norwegian Red Hats!

Contact: Jennifer davjenhovik@yahoo.com
We’ve learned a lot from how Minnesota self-organized and reacted to the ICE occupation.  One feature they leaned into was from the Norwegian heritage in the community by resurrecting the Norwegian Red Hat (Nissa hat) from 1941 – 1943.  It was a way for Norwegian to show unity and protest Nazi Occupation.  It was so effective, the red hats were outlawed in 1943, and people turned to putting a paperclip on their collar to continue.

I would like to propose that our community could continue that tradition as a visual way to stand up against Trump from picking Washington State as the next destination for an ICE invasion.  I can imagine our Southworth Indivisible protest having the sea of red hats.  They can be knitted, or sewn in red fleece, or in the summertime – they could be paper hats even.

Any red hat could fill the need.  I have a knitting pattern titled ‘Melt the ICE Torque’ from Ravelry.com (free), that have the original Norwegian design.  (Nissa hat translates to Gnome hat).

I propose we spread the word to knitters and sewers to start making them for the next No King’s rally.  They would be available for either a food donation, or $20 that will be donated to the food bank.  (Or fund whistle kits).

It could start with an email with a link to the pattern and encourage all to spread the word to knitters we know.  With a few weeks to go – I personally could make several.  If word gets out we could have a hundred hats or more.  Some might only make hats for themselves, others could make more to share.

RESISTANCE SINGERS

MUSICIANS AND SINGERS MEET AND PRACTICE

To anyone interested in the Resistance Singers group. This is a group where enthusiasm counts above all. If you are interested in making good noise you are invited to join us.

In addition to singers we are planning to start a bucket brigade. If you are creative with making things that can be used to make sound (think plastic buckets and wooden spoons), let us know.

We are still working on a regular meeting place and time. We believe we have a permanent space lined up and are now working on a regular time for it.

At our April 14, 2026 meeting at Pilgrim Firs we had two speakers from the South Kitsap School District.

Megan Higgins, School Board Director, District 2 made a presentation about the school board, the upcoming levy on the November, 2026 ballot and the educational offerings of the school district and programs at the high school level.  Ms. Higgins also presented on an opportunity available to members of our group to assist with the School District’s Reading program.

Key take aways from her presentation:
We have a very functional and effective Directors on the School Board working to improve the South Kitsap Schools.

She presented two key statements to remember.
#1.  Tax levies are for learning , school bonds are for buildings.

School levies are levied to provide funds for school district programs, educational opportunities and operating costs that are not covered by state funding.  Levies are short term property taxes,  usually for a short term of 1 to 6 years.  The require a simple majority of 50% of the voter turnout in order to be put into effect.

Bonds are for funding building projects, are long term and require a 60% majority of the electorate in order to be put into effect.  The last bond issue to pass in support of South Kitsap Schools was in 1988.  The last bond that was offered was in 2023.  It failed to pass.

Questions were asked later about educational opportunities for high school students such as apprenticeships, trade training and other alternatives.  Ms. Higgins reported the school and school board would like to provide additional training and apprenticeship offerings, but they are currently constricted by the physical plant at the high school building.  In order to provide additional opportunities, more space and more infrastructure is required to support additional programs and students.

#2.  A major focus for students from kindergarten to third grade is learning to read.  The rest of the school years the reading skill goes to read to learn.  Ms. Higgins discussed an opportunity for all of us to volunteer at your local school to help with the district wide reading program.  There is a need for volunteers to work with students to help them learn to read.

https://www.southkitsapschoolsupporters.com/Katy Hanrahan was accompanying Ms. Higgins as well.  She is a leader of the South Kitsap School Supporters.  She discussed the need for additional community involvement and asked that we consider joining her group to provide additional support.  You may do so by scanning the QR code at the top of this note or by visiting the South Kitsap School Supporters group at website  page directly: https://www.southkitsapschoolsupporters.com/get-involved .
